EVENT – Bicycle Race Marske to Redcar

BICYCLE RACE.

            On Monday afternoon (04/07), a race for the championship of the North of England, and a silver cup given by Mr. H. Gray, of the Station Hotel, came off. The course was from Marske, to Redcar are long the public highway and down the Redcar High Street, a distance of three and a half miles, which distance, which the winner traversed in 16 minutes. There were nine entries for the contest – Mr. Wright, of Newcastle, the winner; Mr. Higgins, of Stockton, who was second; and Mr Waugh, of Lazenby, who obtained a prize of one pound for the neatest costume. Mr. Waugh broke down soon after starting, and came in the morning after the termination of the race; Mr. Wright also broke 2 spokes at the end of Redcar Lane, but repairing his machine again, he mounted, made up the 150 yards, he had lost, and came in winner by about 100 yards.
