Margarethe
Margarethe
On, Sunday, 22nd, March 1857, the sloop "Margarethe", of Corolinensigh, to Hull with a cargo of beans, wrecked on Coatham sands. Three of the crew were drowned. One was saved by the "Zetland", one was washed overboard, and two died from cold. There were some pathetic incidents surrounding this catastrophe. First the captain was overboard off Redcar. Second two young boys were saved but in dying condition when landed. They were taken to the Lobster Inn, Coatham, wrapped in blankets, well rubbed with warm flannels, and hot water bottles applied to restore animation and vitality, internal stimulants to arouse action, but all to no vail. In Coatham churchard a tombstone is erected to the memory of the two boys as follows:-
"Here rests the bodies of Wilhelm August Meean, aged 14 and Staye Meehan aged 11, who
were shipwrecked in the Magarethe of Corolinensigh, Hanover, on Sun. Mar 22nd 1857"
