03/01/2000 The last of the weekly ‘Peanuts’ comic strip is published.
21/01/2000 Total eclipse of the moon turned it reddish orange. The distinctive hue was caused by dust in the Earth’s atmosphere acting like a filter. Experts described the eclipse as one of the most impressive in years.
30/01/2000 Lego was named Toy of the Century by the British Association of Toy Retailers. Lego is Latin for “put together”.
20/02/2000 Emerged that MI5 had files on Johm Lennon. They were sent to the FBI after President Regan asked for an investigation into the Beatle’s political beliefs.
12/03/2000 Jason Button became Britain’s youngest ever Formula 1 driver at the age of 20, when he joined the Williams team
16/03/2000 The production of steel was stopped when it was found that a leak from the furnace of slag due to a malfunction of part(s) This also caused concern over the future of the furnace. Later furnace stopped and repairs effected.
04/05/2000 Ken Livingstone became the first Mayor of London.
10/05/2000 The new Millennium Bridge was opened in London. Temporary sealed off later after large crowds caused the bridge to sway violently. Two years later opened to the public again following tests.
18/06/2000 Scottish mountaineer Jamie Andrew became the first quadruple amputee to climb Mount Nevis.
02/07/2000 First occasion that the British Steel Gala was cancelled due to torrential rain and flooding.
10/08/2010 Archaeologists announced that they had discovered Britain’s earliest house at Starr CArr, near Scarborough, believed 8,500 years BC
14/09/2000 Microsoft releases Windows ME.
17/09/2000 The Tube and Big Breakfast TV Presenter Paula Yates was found dead at hew London home from an accidental heroin overdose.
24/09/2000 Irish band Westlife made pop history by becoming the first act to have six consecutive singles go straight to the top of the UK.
11/10/2000 NASA launches STS-92, the 100th Space Shuttle mission, using Space Shuttle Discovery.
04/11/2000 Panic fuel buying hit Britain in a run up to a blockade. 1 in 10 pumps across the country ran dry.
31/12/2000 The Millennium Dome closed in London. Cost £763 million to build and 6.5 million people visited it over 13 months. Opened by the Queen New Year’s Eve 1999.

15/02/2001 First draft of the complete genome is published in ‘Nature’
10/12/2000 Olympic gold medal rower Steve Redgrave was voted BBC Sports Personality Of The Year.
19/12/2001 Fire at the World Trade Centre, following September 11, was finally extinguished.
26/12/2001 Film, TV and stage actor Sir Nigel Hawthorne passed away at the age of 77.

04/02/2002 Enrique Iglesias was at number one with the song Hero.
02/04/2002 Revealed that the Queen Mother’s legacy to the royal family included a fortune of £60 million with works of art, jewellery, and a castle in Scotland making up the grand total.
10/05/2002 Passenger train travelling from London to Norfolk derailed at Potters Bar railway station in Hertfordshire. Seven people died.
2002 Greenham Common demonstrators, protesting against American cruise missiles on this Berkshire base disbanded after 19 years.
2002 New Shopping Centre opened in November. Named Regents Walk.
2002 Birthday-Centenary celebrations of the ZETLAND – the oldest lifeboat in the world.
26/08/2002 Earth Summit 2002 begins in Johannesburg, South Africa.
01/10/2002 Former American Present Bill Clinton took Kevin Spacey and Allister Campbell out for a Mc Donald’s in Blackpool, the night before speaking at the Labour Party Conference.
15/11/1956 Moors murderer Myra Hindley died in jail, aged 60.

23/01/2003 Final communication between Earth and Pioneer 10. (End of mission.) USA satellite launched 03/03/1972 space probe, and travelled 82,178miles
01/02/2003 Seven astronauts died as Columbia shuttle disintegrated upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
14/04/2003 The Human Genome Project was completed with 99% of the human genome sequenced.
2003 Zetland Lifeboat, Redcar included in list of Historic. National Ships
30/07/2003 In Mexico, the last ‘old style’ Volkswagen Beetle rolls off the assembly line.
2003 Seven Red Plaice monument erected in High Street.
2003 Town Clock (King Edward Memorial Clock) commenced renovation. Fund set up by towns people to save the clock.
2003 Consultation period re Coatham Enclosure improvements in public libraries etc August- Dec.
08/10/2003 Terminator actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California..
26/11/2003 Concorde (British Airways) made its last ever flight over Britain taking off London’ Heathrow Airport to fly to Filton Airfield near Bristol, to go on display.
2004-2005 Mayor – Councillor Mrs Marjorie E Moses.
2004 April/June – Bus shelters removed from around Town Clock area, and pavement blocks laid. New appeal for funds re repair of Town Clock.
08/06/2004 The first transit of Venus during the current millennium.
21/06/2004 SpaceShipOne becomes the first privately funded spaceplane to achieve spaceflight.
2004 Corn Stores Pet Supply Shop closed, Coatham Road, Redcar.. Established since 1927.
2004 Monday, 12th, July, 2004 – THE DAY THE QUEEN CAMEQueen Mary 2 liner sailed slowly past Redcar on way to, Edinburgh, Hebrides, and Norway. Thousands of people out to witness the event along the North Yorkshire Coastline, from Scarboroughto Redcar South Gare. Actually stopped in Scarborough Bay.
2004 Friday, 20th, August, 2004 St David’s O.A.P. Home fire destroys the complete roof. One OAP dies as a result.
2004 Regency Hotel, Coatham Road, demolished. Formerly the site of the Royal Hotel which was demolished by fire (loss of life). Prior to this the hotel was called the York Hotel. Flats to replace these premises.
2004 Safeway Superstore closed 29/10/04. To be reopened as Tesco Superstore later.
05/11/2000 8,000 people attended Redcar Racecourse, for bonfire and fireworks evening.

2005 01 January 2005 QUEEN’S NEW YEAR HONOURS LIST. Tanni Grey-Thompson. became a Dame.Redcar paraplegic athlete
08/01/2005 Sat/Sun. Storm damage in Redcar and surrounding area following gales. Recorded wind speeds 90 mph Redcar, 100 mph South Gare.
14/01/2005 The Huygens probe lands on Saturn’s moon Titan, after being launched 15/10/197, and separated from the Cassian orbiter on 24/12/2004.
18/02/2005 Fox hunting became illegal in England and Wales. The Hunting Act outlawed hunting with dogs.
03/03/2005 Steve Fossett becomes the first person to fly an airplane non-stop around the World solo without refueling.
09/04/2005 Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowes at Windsor.
19/04/2005 Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected as the successor to Pope John Paul II. The new Pope took the name Pope Benedict XVI.
23/04/2005 British film star Sir John Mills died aged 97. Appeared in more than 120 films and won an Oscar for his performance in Ryan’s Daughter.
05/05/2005 The UK general election took place, in which Tony Blair’s Labour Party was re-elected for a third consecutive term
00/06/2005 Redcar R-Kade Skatepark hosted an even the North East leg of the Sprite Uraban Sessions 2005 tour. Many class riders attended the even, Also Disc Jockeys, break-dance and hip[ hop dancers.
2005 JANUARY. Work commenced on the new Roseberry Square development, starting with housing.
2005 February 2005 -Consultation period began with Health Trusts on the development of a new hospital and Health Centre to replace the old Stead Hospital/ B O Davies Health Centre premises.
2005 Monday 14th February 2005, plans/consultation (2) placed before Redcar residents for the re-development of a new Coatham Enclosure.
06/07/2005 London was declared the host city for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
07/07/2005 A series of explosions rocked through London following attacks on the underground and a double decker bus. 56 people were killed, with 700 injured.
16/07/2005 JK Rowling author released book Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince.
22/07/2005 Work started on new Police Headquarters for East Cleveland on Kirkleatham Business Park
23/08/2005 Hurricane Katrina: America’s costliest natural disaster.
2005 The Mars Reconnaissance Orbitor arrives at Mars.
2005 Friday, 19th, August, 2005, Ms Mowlam, Labour MP for Redcar between 1987-2001 died. A memorial for this former MP is proposed.
2005 Proposals to have houses and leisure centre on Coatham Common on display. (Site of old golf course)
2005 Village Green Enquiry as to whether Coatham Common (old golf course) should become Village Green.
02/07/2005 LIVE6 with the world’s biggest musical stars, performing at locations in the UK, Palais de Versailles, France, Philadelphia, Berlin, Rome. Moscow, and Johannesburg. It was to urge political leaders to tackle poverty in Africa.
24/11/2005 The biggest overhaul of Licensing laws in more tham 50 years took effect. It permitted pubs, bars, clubs, and stores in England and Wales to serve alcohol for longer and even round the clock.
25/11/2005 Soccer legend George Best, former star soccer player with Fulham, Manchester United, and Northern Ireland, died after multiple organ failure aged 59.
10/03/2006 The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter arrives at Mars.
16/03/2006 Village Green Enquiry released. Council given permission to build new leisure centre at Coatham Common.
25/03/2006 Lincoln Gold Cup Horse Race, held at Redcar Racecourse, owing to Doncaster Racecourse being renovated. (March)
2006 APRIL. Teesmouth Lifeboat Station was closed
2006 JUNE. Two local MBE’s announced in the Queens Birthday Honours List. John Race MBE for his services to the Royal National Lifeboat Instution, and to Peter Sotheran MBE Trust Chairman, of Sir William Turner’s Almshouses, Kirkleatham.
2006 Council backs Environment Agency, regarding an 8 million pound restoration of flood defence along Redcar Promenade. (April)
2006 Commencement of building set for the movie ‘ Atonement’ along the sea front between the Regent Cinema, and boating lake. Seafront closed and film set made to depict a war scene, with the former Coatham hotel given a look of severe war damage.
24/08/2006 International Astronomical Union (IAU) refined the term “planet” such that Pluto was then considered a dwarf planet.
03/10/2006 RCBC gave permission to surveyors to mark out routes on land at the Coatham Enclosure, and surrounding areas, intended to be used as public rights of way.
05/11/2006 RCBC 30 minute firework display switched to The Stray. (Road closed to traffic)
14/11/2006 Council members of RCBC to meet with Directors of Redcar Racecourse to ensure racing continues at the course, following media events that Redcar Course maybe under threat.
03/12/2006 Redcar Town Centre Christmas Lights switched on.
15/12/2006 First flight of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.

30/12/2006 Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging in Baghdad for crimes against humanity.
09/01/2007 Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveils the first iPhone
14/03/2007 The first World Maths Day was celebrated.
27/06/2007 Tony Blair resigns as British Prime Minister, a position he had held since 1997.
04/08/2007 NASA Phoenix Spaceship launched from CApe Canaveral Air Force Station to find out whether Mars could have once supported life.
25/08/2007 A rookie paraglider escaped serious injury after his glider collided into the cliffs at Saltburn.
06/09/2007 Tributes flooded in from around the world following the death of Luciano Pavarotti due to pancreatic cancer.
29/11/2007 John Darwin walked into a London police station claiming he had no memory of the previous five years. Last seen Hartlepool March 2002 about to paddle out from rocks., Seaton Carew. 16 hour search involving, police Coastguards lifeboats aircraft, and Royal Navy ship. Paddle of canoe found but nothing until his red canoe was found weeks later. Revealed had been to Panama with his wife.

07/04/2008 The Diana inquest ended with the jury concluding she was unlawfully killed because of gross negligence by drink-driver Henri Paul and the paparazzi.
12/05/2008 Earthquake measuring around 8.0 magnitude occurred in Sichuan, China, killing more than 69,000 people.
2008 Bus station High Street, closed. (Heath & Safety.
2008 June 2008 Site of old bandstand demolished leaving the bottom third (level with promenade) to act as a sea defence. (formerly Leo’s Nigh Club and before then council owned)
2008 The Yorkshire Regiment 2 York’s (Green Howard’s) Wednesday, June 18 at 2.30pm formally receive the Borough’s highest civic honour, Freedom of the Borough. Council’s Mayor, Councilor Mike Findley, took the salute, inspecting the troops, and presented a Freedom scroll to the officer in charge, Major Mark Bower, QGM.

2008 Redcar Lakes Primary School banned parents from a schools sports day because of being unruly, swearing, abusiveness, and berating their own children for not winning.
2008 Redcar & Cleveland College Annex Buildings, Redcar Lane, sold off to privately for the purpose of building new houses. New proposals for the building of a new college on Corporation Road, Redcar to replace the annex, and the college already on Corporation Road.

06/04/2009 A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near L’Aquila, Italy, killing 307 people.

2009 Between 23rd, June, 2009, and 25th, June, 1909, Zetland Primary School, Redcar Lane, Redcar, celebrated its 150th Anniversary from the day it opened.
2009 Saturday, 18th,July, 2009 Up to 5,000 workers, and families marched through the streets of Redcar following the proposed closure of the Redcar Corus Steelworks. (Formerly Dorman Long, British Steel Corporation). The closure would mean the end of steel making in this area.
18/08/2009 Former Korean president and 2000 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Kim Dae-Jung died of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.
27/08/2009 English youth Michael Perham aged 17 years, five months, became the youngest person to complete a circumnavigation of the world by sailboat, breaking previous record by two months.
05/12/2009 Some1,700 job losses are to take place at Corus Steelworks, Teesside.
30/12/2009 British hostage Peter Moore, was freed. Spent 31 months in captivity after he and four bodyguards were seized from the France Ministry in Baghdad.
