MEETING – Tradesmen and Residents

AT LAST
Amusement for People during Summer Months

We are glad to notice that at last the question which has repeatedly asked for years both by residents and visitors, why some amusement is not provided for the people during the summer months, is in a fair way of being satisfactorily answered. A large and influential meeting of Tradesmen and Residents was held in the Central Hall on Tuesday (22/04) evening.

A very able committee was appointed to canvas the town for subscriptions. Over 100 guineas have been promised, and the Committee are sanguine that their efforts will be crowned with succeed, but to ensure complete success the inhabitants must c-operate with the committee to their endeavour to obtain the amount required to secure a good band for the town. There cannot be two opinions as to the necessity of providing a band seeing that we are not to have the services of the Militia band this year.

If the inhabitants are alive to their own interests, they will rise to the occasion, and not allow other watering places to leave them behind in the race for public favour. We are quite sure that the Chairman (Dr Day) and the secretary (Mr. Jas. Howcroft), who are a host in themselves, will do all that is possible to be done to ensure success. We trust they will be heartily supported.
