REDCAR SPRING MEETING
FRIDAY, MAY, 15th. 1868.
The annual spring races took place upon the sands at Redcar, on Friday last (15/05), and passed off in the most successful manner, the racing b being a great improvement upon that of previous years. The weather was well suited to the outdoor amusements, and one of the largest crowds we ever remember seeing on the beach assembled to witness the racing. The good ring, in which several betting lists were erected, and commodious stand afforded ample accommodation for those who were willing to pay for an elevated view the scene. There were four races set down for decision, but three of them being in the heats, it was a late hour before the afternoon’s programme was got through. Which reminds was created by the jockeys riding in wrong colours, in all races, and the committee would do well to enforce the rules in this respect. We understand that the committee have met with so much support and encouragement on this occasion that they purpose having two days racing, with a principal stake of least £50, and other additional races next year; it is thought that the use of some field on the south side of Redcar can be had for the races, and the promoters of the movement are saying sanguine of success.
