Reference – Continued Depression of Trade in Cleveland (Mining)

Accreditation The Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea Gazette 21/09/1877.

The depression of trade throughout Cleveland seems to be still increasing. Lately there were no less than three mines stopped, and on Saturday last (15/09). The whole of the men employed at Spar Wood Mines, belonging to the Weardale, IM and Call Company, Ltd, and the Tocketts Mine owned by Messrs. J. W. Pease and Co., received a fortnight’s notice. The Tocketts Mine was only opened at the beginning of the year. The whole of the workmen at each place reside at Guisborough. The only mine at work now in the Guisborough district is the Chaloner Pit Mine, at which a large number of men find employment, but being full up at present it is expected that large numbers will leave for America and Australia shortly. The number of empty houses in Guisborough is said to be between 100 and 200.
