STORM ON THE COAST

During the whole of Sunday night and Monday (07-08/10), a strong northerly gale prevailed on the coast, causing a heavy sea to rise. At Redcar, at high water on Monday afternoon, the sea in some places overtopped the sea wall, and the footpath along the Esplanade was coloured with surf. At Whitby the sea flooded the New Quay and other low parts of the town, and even advanced into some of the streets; in the morning, a Hartlepool fishing coble, lying in the port, broke adrift owing to the fury of the storm, and a mooring-post going through her bottom, she sank – the master, who was on board, narrowly escaping going down with her. At Seaton Carew, and the body of a seafaring man, in an advanced state of decomposition, was washed ashore, and has been identified as that of one of the Hartlepool pilots who was recently drowned in the bay.
