REDCAR LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING

The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Monday last (28/01). Present: Mr. J. H. Webster (in the chair), Messrs Blatherwick, Coulson, Crabtree, Patterson, and Wren; Messrs. J. G. Thompson (clerk), and Mr D. D. Bookless (surveyor and inspector of nuisances.). Minutes having been read and confirmed, the Clerk was requested to prepare and lay before the Board at their next meeting estimate of a special rate to be levied on the Upleatham portion of the district. He was also requested to write to Mr. Rowland, of Loftus, with reference to the drains and privy accommodation of property belonging to him in German Street. The surveyor submitted a plan for the scavenging of the town, by dividing the same into five districts to be let to farmers; he recommended that £10 be allowed to cover any extra expense the contract is might be put to fall wheeling out the manure, and the term of agreement be for 12 months from the 1st of March, 1878, to the 20th day of February, 1879. The Chairman explained that at present the scavenging was done by the Board, but this arrangement had been considered somewhat costly, and of late there had been great difficulty in disposing of the manure. In answer to these questions, the Surveyor said that the loss to the town after the manure had been sold had been somewhere about £25 per year. A long discussion took place on the subject, Mr. Blatherwick, and Mr. Patterson favouring a suggestion that the manure were be thrown out of the ash pits by men employed by the Board, and simply carted away by the farmers; and the other members present being opposed to any charge in the existing arrangements unless the scavenging was to be done altogether, apart from the Board. It was ultimately resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, and seconded by Mr. Crabtree, that the Surveyor’s scheme be adopted, with the modification of the amount of free numeration to £20. The Surveyor was authorised to procure and lay down a flush tank in Cowl’s open. Plan of alterations to the shop front at No. 41, High Street, submitted by Mr. W. Lowes, approved. Plan of three dwelling houses and shops, intended to be built in High Street, by Mr. G. Robinson, approved.
