EVENT – Redcar Regatta

Accreditation the Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea Gazette 25/08/1871.

REDCAR REGATTA.

          On Monday next (28/08) a regatta will take place when the following prizes will be offered for competition :-

1^st       A rowing race with fishing or pilot cobles, first prize £3, second prize £1.

2^nd      A sailing race in fishing or pilot cobles, first prize £3, second prize £1.

3^rd       A rowing race with pleasure dinghies, first prize £2, second prize10shillings.

4^th       A rowing race in pleasure dinghies, first prize £1.10shillings, second prize 10 shillings.

The first race will commence at two o’clock, and we trust the regatta committee will meet with every success.

REDCAR REGATTA.

          On Monday last (28/08) a regatta took place at Redcar. The weather was all that could be desired even by the most fastidious for the occasion, and considering that the regatta was first attempt, we may congratulate the gentleman who had the affair in the hand on its success. The following were the winners. :-

Rowing race with fishing or pilot cobles. first prize £3, John Picknett, second prize, £1. James Metcalf.

The next was a match for £2 between Charles Bainbridge, George Robinson, and James Lee and John Jackson, in which the last name two proved the winners after a well contested race.

A sailing race in fishing or pilot cobles, first prize £3, James Metcalf; second, £1, Joseph Carter.

A rowing race with pleasure dinghies to men in each boat, the first prize (£2) being worn by John Thomson, and the second (10s.) by John Picknett.

A rowing race interpolation dinghies. One man in each boat, T. Picknett was the winner of the first prize (1.10s.) Hard struggle, and the second (10s.) was awarded to James Metcalf.

The next was a race in which a great deal of interest was evinced, the amateur race, to men in each boat, prize, two silver medals, which were awarded to Charles Whitaker and William Preston. We have the opportunity given us to examine the medals, and in our opinion they were really fine ones, and no doubt the winners of them will be justly proud of their hard earned laurels.

The last race was for boards of any size or build, one man in each boat and Thomas Baker succeeded in winning the first prize, £1.10s., and Richard Picknett second. 10s.

Mr Foster officiated as starter and drug, and Mr Livingston (member of the Middlesbrough Amateur Boating Club was the referee.)
