CONGREGATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL

On Wednesday last (31/12/1873). The annual tea connection with the Congregational Sabbath School was held in the new School Room, when about 100 persons sat down. After tea a Christmas tree was exhibited, on which a large and varied assortment of useful and ornamental articles were offered for sale. The total proceeds of tea and Christmas tree amounted to £30.15s.11d. On Thursday, (01/01). The children and teachers were regaled with tea and buns, provided by Messrs. Watson and Pattison, after which, a public meeting was held in the Chapel, presided over by the Rev. J. Parnaby, of Middlesbrough. A number of select pieces and dialogues were recited during the evenings, which were interspersed by the singing of appropriate hymns by the children assisted by their teachers. The report was written by the Secretary (Mr. J. W. Lister) from which it appeared that the flagging around the new school and Chapel, together with other sundry expenses amounting in all to £612.6s.10d., Had been defrayed, and a balance of £1.1s.5d., left in the hands of the treasure. There are 90 scholars on the books, whose average attendance in the morning is about 35, and in the afternoon about 75; there is a staff of 12 teachers, and altogether the place is in a very flourishing condition.
