THE FEVER HOSPITAL QUESTION IN CLEVELAND

          A special meeting of the Guisborough Rural Sanitary Authority was held on Tuesday afternoon (28/02) to discuss the question. Mr. Knolly’s, Local Government Board Inspector, was in attendance.

          Mr W, Bungay presided, and said it was nearly two years since Mr Knollys had had called the attention of that authority to the necessity of providing a hospital in which to treat cases of infectious us nature. He was now pleased to inform that gentleman that the Local Boards of Saltburn, Redcar and Guisborough had expressed their willingness to combine, with the object of carrying out a joint scheme. A suitable and central site had been secured in Sandy Lane, Near Saltburn, and Lord Zetland, the owner, would adapt an old farmhouse with the grounds adjoining for hospital purposes. The building would be entirely isolated by some 200 yards from Sandy Lane itself, and by some few miles from any population. As at present proposed twelve beds could be provided, but should an emergency occur another ward could be utilised. It was proposed that this building should be taken on lease for 99 years, at a certain annual rental, to avoid incurring any great expenditure and borrowing of money.

          Mr Knolly’s said he should not like to express any opinion on the plans offhand, though they appeared to be suitable. He thought the different authorities had done the best thing they could in the formation of a joint scheme, and he congratulated them on the action they had taken. He suggested that the plan and the formal resolution be sent to the Local Government Board, who would communicate with the Boards concerned.

          The Chairman then proposed the following resolution.

 “That this Authority, with respect to the townships of Wilton, Marske, and Upleatham,  are prepared to join with the Saltburn, Guisborough, and Redcar Local Boards in the formation of a joint Hospital Board to provide accommodation for persons suffering from infectious disease in the districts of the latter Boards and townships of Wilton, Marske, and Upleatham, the basis of contribution being left over for future consideration, and that the Clerk be instructed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Local Government Board and the Local Boards concerned.”
