EVENT – Opening of a Public Market at Redcar

Accreditation The Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea Gazette 21/12/1877.

OPENING OF A PUBLIC MARKET AT REDCAR

The East end of the Central Hall was opened as a public market for the first time on Saturday (14/12). This was due to the enterprise and public spirit of Mr. Cowl, the owner of the building, who has undertaken to provide stalls, etc., free of charge for three weeks, at the expiration of which time, provided the experiment proves successful, further arrangements are to be made. Should the market be permanently established, it will meet a want long felt in Redcar, and the inhabitants of the numerous populous places in the immediate neighbourhood may also be expected to patronise it: judging by the thronged state of the building on Saturday last, and the amount of business done, there can be little doubt but that such will be the case.
