SHIPWRECKS & GROUNDINGS “John” Saltburn

WRECKED SCHOONER – SALTBURN.
The wrecked Schooner “John,” which belonged to Mr Alexander Ross, of Tain, in Ross-shire, still lies embedded in the sands, not far from the promenade pie r. It has been ascertained that the vessel was bound Tain to Sunderland, laden with pit props and crown trees for the collieries, and that she was manned with a crew of four men and a boy, the whole of whom have been despaired of, their having been no tidings of them since Tuesday week (18/10). All the crew except the captain, whose name was MacKenzie, were unmarried; MacKenzie, however, leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. It is conjectured that the schooner, having failed to put into Sunderland, had made for Hartlepool , which she had also failed in reaching, and had drifted to where she now lies. The whole has been sold by auction, and the Cardinal, which is being carried ashore, will be sold shortly. The owner was fully insured.
