Military – First North York Artillery Volunteers

FIRST NORTH YORK ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS.

            On Saturday afternoon (28/08), the First North York Artillery Volunteer corps was inspected at Redcar, by Colonel Hill, R.A. The Middlesbrough and Eston batteries arrived by special train at three  o’clock, and on their arrival at Redcar and Guisborough batteries were awaiting them at the railway station. There were present on parade:- Officers 18; Sergeants, 24; band, and trumpeters, 22; rank and file, 284;-total, 348. Preceded by the band, the men were marched to the race course, where the inspection took place, after wards proceeding to the artery, where detachments of efficients and recruits were put through gun drill. In the evening, the annual dinner took place provided by Mr. Howcroft,, of Middlesbrough, and served in a marquee on the racecourse. After dinner, the loyal toasts having been duly honoured, Lieutenant-Colonel Chaloner congratulated the men on the inspection that day, and referred to the increase on last year in the numbers present on parade, when there were only 271, at the annual inspection, out of a total of 330 – now the total strength of the corps was 422; the inspecting-officer was all so well satisfied with their efficiency and general appearance. (Cheers.) – The “Health of the Lieutenant-Colonel” was then proposed, and the toast, as usual, was drunk, amidst enthusiast cheering. Cheers having all so been given for Captain Jones, the adjutant, the men were dismissed.
