PRESENTATION AT REDCAR GAS COMPANY

            On Friday the 2^nd inst., the directors and shareholders of the Redcar Gas Company met at Redcar for the purpose of presenting their Chairman with a testimonial, consisting of a Silver Kettle and Stand, and Tea and Coffee Services; the whole of the articles are the most elegant design and finish, and were manufactured by Messrs Reid and Sons, of Newcastle, at a cost of about 10 guineas, it bore the following inscription: “Presented by the directors and shareholders of the Redcar Gas Company, to Thomas Garbutt, Esq., Chairman of the Board of Directors, as an expression of various steam, and in recognition of his valuable services to the Company. Redcar. July, 1869.” For some hours before the presentation the plate was exhibited in the Gas Company’s new offices, and was inspected by most of the principal inhabitants of Redcar and Coatham, who seemed much pleased with the reception given them, and warmly expressed their admiration of the beautiful articles, and took the opportunity of drinking health and prosperity to Mr and Mrs Garbutt. Afterwards a complimentary dinner was given to the chairman at the Lobster Inn, Coatham, where the most sumptuous dinner was served by Mr and Mrs Hikley. The presentation was made on behalf of the directors and shareholders of the Gas Company, by Henry Denton, Esq., of Redcar, who alluded in the course of a spirited speech to the early history of the company, drawing a dismal picture of its various misfortunes, and afterwards contrasting those misfortunes with the success and prosperity that had immediately followed upon the present Chairman’s acceptance of office, and attributing the change that had taken place in the fortunes of the company in a very great measure to the judicious and economic call management of the, Chairman who exercised a most careful control over the expenditure of the company, and took care that every thing required was bought in the best market. Several shareholders spoke most warmly in praise of the Chairman, and of these services he had rendered the company. The Chairman acknowledged in a suitable manner. The great honours that had been conferred upon him, and a steward the directors and shareholders that he fully appreciated and valued the splendid testimonial they had given him, and assured the directors and shareholders that he fully appreciated and valued the splendid testimonial they had given him, but that it was impossible for him to sufficiently thank them for having considered him worthy of it.
