  OPENING OF THE SOUTH GARE
BREAKWATER BY
Mr. W. H. SMITH,  M.P.

On Thursday afternoon (25/10/), the First Lord of the Treasury, the Right Hon. W. H. Smith, M.P., formally opened the South Gare Breakwater at the mouth of the river Tees. A distinguished company assembled to witness the dedication of this national work, the most important of the great engineering works which have been carried out during the last 30 years for the improvement of the navigation of the Tees, and the proceedings connected with the opening ceremony were of exceptionally interesting and attractive character.

In the evening a grand banquet was held in the Exchange Hall, when about 500 guests sat down.
