SHIPWRECKS & GROUNDINGS – Whitby sloop ‘LIZZIE’ grounded Salt Scar Rocks

Accreditation The Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea Gazette 26/10/1877.

A WHITBY VESSEL ON REDCAR ROCKS.

About half- past eight o’clock on Saturday evening (20/10), the sloop Lizzie, of Whitby, (John Hind, master), from Whitby to South Shields with a cargo of scrap iron, struck the East Scar rocks, opposite the Redcar battery. Attracted by the lights burned on board the vessel, the crews of several cobles belonging Redcar put off in their boats to render assistance, but fortunately there help was not required, as the sloop was got off by her own crew between ten and eleven o’clock the same night, without having sustained any apparent damage.
