STORM – Gale causes extensive damage

TERRIFIC GALE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO HOUSE PROPERTY
AT COATHAM AND WARRENBY

     A terrific gale from the North West raged yesterday morning, and much damage has been caused by property at Coatham and Warrenby. Three houses near Coatham Convalescent Home, Coatham, belonging to Mr Hughes, have had both gable ends blown in, besides sustaining other damage, the house nearest the Home being a complete wreck. The gable end of one of Mr Love’s houses in Station Road has been blown down, carrying with it the whole of the upper rooms. Amongst other damage to property in course of erection may be noticed that at Mr Patton’s villa, near Christ Church, the inside walls of which have been blown down, as have also those of a row of houses near Mr Bennison’s farm, belonging to Mr Husband. The chimney of Captain Schmidt house, Coatham Villa, fell through the roof into one of the sleeping apartments, the occupants of which fortunately escaped without injury. At Warrenby, tremendous havoc has again been done by the wind, particularly in a row of houses belonging to Messrs Bradley and Whitehead, the gable end and the inside walls of which are all down.
