LOCATION – Touchwood
During the early part of the 1900’s, promenade work took place so that it was widened and lengthened. It eventually reached to where the (Stray pink path now begins.) Across the land at this point was a wooden fence, from the sea front across the road towards the general direction of Zetland Park. Of course the Stray main road out of town to Marske was not there, just sand dunes and grass land.
The fence became synonymous. Male and females who walked the promenadealong from Coatham, on reaching the wooden fence would tap the it gently with their walking stick(s) etc, turn around, and head back along the promenade retracing their steps.
Hence the name “Touch-wood”.
