Vigilant

A schooner “Vigilant” of Montrose, 16/10/1892, wrecked off Saltburn. On the morning (15/10) riding on its anchor in a heavy sea became partially dismasted. The lifeboat went off but the captain refused assistance. Later they turned came alongside and could have taken the “Vigilant” in safety to Middlesbrough, but the captain would not pay the price asked, and the total departed. During the night the storm returned more fiercely and on the morning of (16/10). The vessel signalled for help and the lifeboat was launched and saved the crew of four.
