YAWL or YOLE – definition –

(1) A two masted fore and aft sailing boat with the mizzen-mast stepped far aft.

(2) A small kind of fishing boat

(3) A ship’s jolly boat with four or six oars

The word YAWL or YOLE relates to a Norwegian boat of this name, and it is believed that the small boats first originated in and around Redcar were built with a connection to this type of boat.
