EVENT – Whitsuntide Holidays 1870
Accreditation the Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea Gazette 10/06/1870.
The weather this Whitsuntide being unusually fine, a vast number of people availed themselves of the opportunity of paying a visit to the seaside on Monday (06/06) and Tuesday (07/06), excursion trains were around two Redcar and Saltburn from Leeds, Halifax, Todmorden, and Darlington, bringing a large number of pleasure seekers from these places; besides which, many came from the neighbouring towns by the ordinary trains. The excursionists flocked to Saltburn in large numbers, attracted by the pier and the splendid pleasure grounds. At the pier, 6000 people paid for admission on the two days; and at the grounds there were upwards of 2000 assembled, who seemed greatly to enjoy the beautiful scenery, and the music performed by Mr. Greoning’s hand. In addition to the excursionists by rail, several steamers came loaded with passengers from Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, and Whitby. At Redcar, as usual, the principal attractions were the bathing machines and the pleasure boats, which were extensively patronised.
