FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT AT REDCAR

            On Friday (18/04) morning about 8.30 a.m. as Mr. John Boagey, accompanied by his son Thos. Wm. Boagey, was returning from examining crab creels in their small boat “Elizabeth,” when near the pier a heavy sea struck the boat and capsized it, throwing both occupants into the sea. The accident was observed from the shore and with all speed Michael Burnicle, Thomas Carter, and James Carter, put off to the rescue, and succeeded in saving the father, but the son aged 19 years, was unfortunately drowned. The boat was shortly afterwards brought ashore bottom upwards. The body had not been found.

          The body of the young man Thos. Wm. Boagey, who was drowned on April 18th by the upsetting of his father’s boat near Redcar Pier, was found early on Wednesday morning on the sands opposite Dundas Street by a Coast-guard named Broad. The body was identified by the relatives, and the coroner, Mr Robinson, held the inquest at the Royal Hotel on the afternoon of the same day. The jury found a verdict of “Accidentally drowned by the capsizing of a boat in rough sea near the shore.”
