HIGHWAY ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE BY MILITIAMEN

     Two members of the North Durham Militia, named Thomas Spadding, of Seaham Harbour, and John Cawthorne, of Darlington, were charged before T. Hugh Bell, Esq., on Monday, 1st, inst with having violently assaulted George William Duck, of New Marske, painter, on Saturday night, and also with robbing him of his watch, coat, waistcoat, cap, boots and sixpence. Prosecutor had been at Redcar, and was returning to Marske, by the banks, when he was set upon and robbed by three militiamen. On giving information at the Redcar police station on Sunday morning, Police Sergeant Alexander accompanied him to the encampment, where the whole of the men forming the fatigue party were paraded and Capt. Reed, and the prisoners were identified by prosecutor as two of the men who had attacked and robbed him.

     The coat and boots were found behind a nearby hedge near to where the robbery took place, and part of the guard to which the watch had been attached was picked up by a woman on the sands on Sunday morning. Prisoners were remanded to Guisborough.
