FIRE AT THE EARL OF ZETLAND’S LONDON RESIDENCE.
About three o’clock on Wednesday morning (13/02) a constable of the A Division, on duty in the Greenpark, observing spark issuing from the residence of the Earl of Zetland, in Arlington Street, lost no time in rousing the inmates and sending for the engines. On arrival, the fireman it was found that some joists between the library and lady Zetland’s bedroom, supposed through the overheating of a fire in the adjoining house (that of the Marquis of Salisbury), were on fire. It was some time before the exact origin of the fire could be ascertained, and it was not extinguished until some pictures and books of great value were damaged by fire and water. For a time it was feared that the fire would have extended to the residence of the Marquis of Salisbury. The Earl and Countess were out of town, the house being in charge of three female servants.
