GRAND TEMPERANCE GALA AT UPLEATHAM

By the kind permission of the Earl of Zetland, the Middlesbro’ Young Men’s Temperance Society held its third annual gala in the above grounds on Monday last (03/07). If the success of a demonstration depended mainly on the number of persons taking part in it, or the number of spectators, then indeed might a gathering of this kind, which took place on that day, be chronicled as congratulatory to the promoters of the above gala? Several persons addressed the people present congratulating them on the spread of temperance principles, of the desirability of closing public houses, and of the curse of drunkenness, concluding in each case by urging their hearers at once to sign the pledge – a course of action which would be productive of good results. Milburn’s model prize band was in attendance, and played for dancing. Refreshments were provided on the ground.
