REDCAR LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING

GRANTING OF LICENSES – STEAM BOATS – MEDICAL OFFICER – ROADS IN  AND AROUND  REDCAR

An ordinary monthly meeting was held on Monday afternoon (05/10). Mr. Marwood in the chair.

LETTER FROM MR GILLIGAN

A letter was read out from Mr Gilligan denying the allegation that he had plied his boats for hire since the Board had refused to grant him a license, although he said that he had plied his for years without opposition

STEAMBOATS

The Clerk (Mr Chilton) stated that he had made inquiries touching the liability of steam boats plying without the authority of the Board. It was a matter of general law as to whether the end of the pier was under the jurisdiction of the Board, or not. The Crown, he thought, was the only power that could interfere with the plying of steamboats. A resolution was adopted to the effect that the Board had no jurisdiction over the steamboats.

MEDICAL OFFICER

The district was reported healthy, being almost entirely free from sickness. The death rate was 8 per 1000.

ROADS IN AND AROUND REDCAR

The question of memorialising Quarter Sessions to declare the roads within the jurisdiction of the Board main roads was discussed. Mr Lee held that if such a system was adopted urban authorities would have to contribute towards the making of county roads. Mr Hudson said they were already contributing to the maintenance of roads in the county without deriving any benefit, whereas if their roads were declared main roads the county would contribute one half towards their maintenance. Quarter Sessions in favour of having roads declared main roads.
